Brasília – The social area has presented improvement, but, according to the Development Quality Index (IQD), disclosed on Thursday (15) by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), the Brazilian economy had a weak performance last year. The index shows how the main components for economic development contributed for the economic growth of the country.
Including the Quality of Growth, Quality of Foreign Insertion and Quality of Well Being indices, the IQD ranges from 0 (all items unfavourable) to 500 points (all items favourable to growth).
According to André Viana, an Ipea research technician, among the indices, the one with the best performance was in Quality of Well Being, in which social questions are taken into account, which reached 324.07 points in December last year. "Despite the greater rate of unemployment in the first half of 2011, we had other indices, like the rate of poverty, which remained down throughout the year,” said Viana.
On commenting the results, Viana pointed out the social policies adopted in the country in recent years, which are bringing improvement in the social area. Although some components of the index worsened, the policies were maintained.
