Brasília – Trade disputes filed against Brazil are keeping the country from grossing USD 1 billion a year through exports. The number was made public this Wednesday (10) by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), based on a tracking of 13 different trade protection tools employed against Brazil since 2015.
A CNI report shows that whenever a complaint is filed regarding a given type of good, its exports plummet by 86% in the 12 months that follow. The most frequent tools are antidumping, anti-subsidies (or compensations) and safeguards.
The most targeted industries are metals (eight complaints) and sugar (two complaints). It also shows that these disputes are increasing in number each year – from two in 2015 to six in 2016 and nine in 2017.
The United States accounts for the most trade protection actions during the timeframe at hand – three complaints involving metals, one involving paper and one involving rubber.
