São Paulo – Brazil’s Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) has temporarily lowered the import tax on six products due to undersupply. The tax has been cut from 14% or above to 2% for imports of milk whey, some types of polyester, two types of welded steel pipes, steel sheets, plates and strips. The tax break will remain in effect for a year, except for polyesters, whose tax will return to normal on January 17, 2014.
The tax break for milk whey, whose former tariff was 28%, applies to a maximum of 2,000 tonnes. Milk whey is a by-product of cheese manufacturing and is used in making children’s formula for infants up to 1 year old, as a complement to breastfeeding.
The maximum amount of polyesters that may be imported at the lowered tax is 40,400 tonnes. The product’s former tariff was 18%. The product to which the measure applies is a partially-oriented yarn (POY) that is used as a raw material for making polyester filament yarn. The maximum quota for imports of welded steel pipes is 5,000 tonnes for one particular type and 8,000 for another.
The former import tax for steel sheets and strips, no thicker than 0.2, was 20%, and the tax break quota is 563 tonnes. The maximum quota for steel plates and strips thicker than 0.2 millimetres is 563 tonnes. The products are used in making automobile condenser and radiator parts.
