São Paulo – Brazil and Syria aim to boost political relations. The theme was discussed at a meeting between Carlos Martins Ceglia, Director of the Middle East Division of the Brazilian Foreign Office (Itamaraty), and the Syrian deputy Foreign Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, according to an article published by the Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) this week.
According to Sana, Mikdad addressed Syria’s stances towards what is happening in the region and the nature of these developments, stressing the need for these developments to serve the interest of the Arab countries and the aspirations of their people.
He stressed that Syria and Brazil share common principles represented in keenness on establishing good relations with all countries, based on the independence of national decision, reciprocal respect and not succumbing to foreign diktats.
Mikdad emphasized the need for pushing Syrian-Brazilian relations forward through implementing agreements signed between the two countries and expanding cooperation prospects.
For his part, Ceglia said Brazil attaches great importance to strengthening its relations with Syria and the Arab countries on the bilateral level or within the framework of Arab-South American cooperation to build a comprehensive cooperation system and keep pace with the political and economic changes in the world.
He stressed Brazil’s solidarity with the struggle of the Arab people to end Israel’s occupation of the Arab territories and achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region.
