Rio de Janeiro- The performance of the Brazilian economy during the financial crisis that started in 2008 attracted foreigners into the country and caused Brazilians formerly living abroad to return to the country. The information was supplied by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which published the consolidated data of the 2010 Census this Friday (27th).
The IBGE survey shows that in 2010, 286,500 immigrants who had spent the last five years out of the country were back. There was an increase of 86.7% compared with 2000 figures, when returning Brazilians reached 143,600.
Of all those who arrived in Brazil in 2010, 174,600 (65%) were Brazilians, twice as many as in the previous survey (87,900). The survey coordinator, Luiz Antônio Oliveira, explains that Brazil’s economic situation and the financial issues facing other countries caused Brazilians to return, and new migratory flows to be established.
