São Paulo – Brazil has received requests for refuge from 90 Syrians ever since the conflicts erupted in the Arab country, in March of last year, according to information published on the United Nations (UN) website. Thus far, 34 have been recognized as refugees, and 56 cases are under analysis.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) and its partners are already working with these refugees and bidders to reorganize their family and working lives, helping them to obtain documents, use public services, take Portuguese classes, and find work.
There are refugees and bidders in the states of São Paulo, Amazonas, Federal District, Paraná, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina. The Unhcr estimates that there are more Syrians who have fled to Brazil than only the cases on record.
