Recife – Research centres that work with stem cells in Brazil will receive investments from the Ministry of Science and Technology, to expand their scientific activities in search for treatment and cure of diseases, announced Minister Eduardo Campos. He was participating this Monday (4) on a seminar about the new Biosecurity Law, at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in the northeast of Brazil.
According to Campos, his Ministry in partnership with the Ministry of Health will issue, still this week, a document to release US$4.1 million (R$11 million) for this research.
"We know that there are five million people in Brazil with diseases that lead to muscle atrophy, diabetes, Parkinson, or that had their spinal cord affected by accidents that have great possibility of cure. For this reason, we need to advance and maintain Brazil in a leading position in the area of biotechnology," said the Minister.
The event, which gathers researchers, students, doctors, and representatives of handicapped rights defence entities, will also include discussions about genetically modified organisms.
