Brasília – As part of an international cooperation program to assist victims of AIDS around the world, yesterday Brazil sent drugs to Columbia, El Salvador, Paraguay and the Domincan Republic. The drugs were manufactured in Brazil and are sufficient for 100 patients in each country for a period of three months. The program began at the end of last year when Brazil sent drugs to Bolivia and Mozambique.
Besides the drugs, Brazil offers technical assistance and training for healthcare professionals. The program will be extended to other countries in Africa: Kenya, Bukina Fasso, Namibia, Botswana and Burundi, besides the Portuguese-speaking nations of Angola, São Tome and Principe, and Cabo Verde..
It is estimated that at the moment only one million HIV-positive persons in the world have access to adequate medical assistance. The United Nations estimates the total number of AIDS victims at 40 million. Most of them live in Africa and Latin America, where Brazil is the only country that offers a complete, free course of treatment for all victims of AIDS. This international cooperation program is an extension of the treatment program the Brazilian government offers to its own citizens.
