São Paulo – Brazil should become self-sufficient in ammonia and urea production within five years, according to projections made by the minister of Agriculture, Reinhold Stephanes. The minister met with president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the president of Petrobras, José Sérgio Gabrielli, on this Tuesday (24th).
At the meeting, Petrobras disclosed its plans of importing production units of the two items, which are made using gas. Presently, Brazil imports over 70% of the ammonia and urea that it uses for agricultural purposes.
The country is also seeking self-sufficiency in other types of fertilisers and fertiliser inputs, such as potassium. In this case, the country also has beds of the product, but does not possess the necessary production structure yet. Self-sufficiency should be attained in ten years.
The information was supplied by the press advisory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
