São Paulo – Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement this Friday (12) supporting the creation of a taskforce to work for a ceasefire in Syria. The International Syria Support Group, composed of the United States, Russia and 12 other countries, ruled last Thursday evening (11) in Munich, Germany, that a taskforce should be created, that hostility between world powers in the Arab country should end, and that humanitarian action must commence in the country this week.
In its statement, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry asserts that “the Brazilian government has reiterated its support for a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict, denouncing its continuing militarization, and has contributed to international humanitarian crisis mitigation efforts.” The Syrian crisis broke out during the Arab Spring in 2011, with clashes between Bashar Al Assad’s government forces and the opposition. The United States calls for Assad to step down, while Russia is attacking anti-regime forces.
