São Paulo – Brazil’s Finance minister Nelson Barbosa said this Wednesday (27) that the Brazilian government supports the reelection of Christine Lagarde for managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “Lagarde’s permanence in the IMF is crucial in addressing the current global economic challenges,” said Barbosa according to a federal government communiqué.
Lagarde’s term ends on July 05 and the Fund’s Executive Board launched the succession process. The nomination period began last week and will continue until February 10. The choice must be made by early March, preferably by consensus, according to a statement from Board dean Aleksei Mozhin.
