Brasilia – Brazil was elected on Wednesday (29) to preside the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission in 2014. The mission is to help countries who were recently involved in armed conflict to build a scenario of political stability and security.
On the agenda to be developed by Brazil are projects for Burundi, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia and Central African Republic.
Created in 2005, the UN Peacebuilding Commission aims to help nations in fragile situations to ensure national safety, work on sustainable development and social inclusion.
The Brazilian government issued a statement informing that it will promote greater participation of developing countries and regional and sub-regional organizations in the Commission’s activities, as well as maintain “productive involvement” with the UN Security Council. According to the statement, the activities headed by Brazil will take into account the “interdependence” between security and development.
