São Paulo – Brazil and the United Arab Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation in personal data protection, the exchange of regulatory best practices, and the strengthening of ties in the digital agenda. The partnership was formalized during the 47th Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), held from September 15 to 19 in Seoul, South Korea.
The agreement was signed by Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) and the Dubai International Financial Centre Authority (DIFC), according to a publication by ANPD on Tuesday (16). The Brazilian institution was represented by its CEO, Waldemar Gonçalves, and the UAE’s by Vice President Lori Baker. The DIFC is responsible for data protection in the UAE.
According to ANPD, the document does not create legal obligations, and its implementation depends on the discretion of both parties. However, the memorandum of understanding establishes the basis for joint actions, such as the exchange of information on investigations, conducting joint inspections, and providing mutual technical support. The agreement also provides for the development of education, training, and awareness programs, as well as joint research projects.
