São Paulo – The Brazilian agribusiness sector posted revenues of US$ 4.9 billion in the month of September, 14.6% more than in the same period of last year. The products that contributed the most to the performance were cereals and concoctions, soy and meat, according to data supplied by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade.
Exports of the soy complex (oil, grain and chaff) grew 22.2% in comparison with September of last year, and totalled US$ 967 million. The rise was due to a 37% increase in average price, as the amount exported decreased by approximately 10%. Meat complex sales rose by 19.6%, totalling US$ 894.9 million. Average price also increased by 13%, and the exported amount, by 5.7%.
The sugar and alcohol sector reduced the value of its exports by 13% in September, in comparison with the same month of 2006. The price of sugar fell by 27.9%, but the shipped volume increased by 26.5%. The result was an 8.8% decline in exported value. Revenues from alcohol exports decreased by 25.4%, shipped volume was 6.6% smaller, and the prices were 20.2% lower.
From January to September this year, agribusiness exports have totalled US$ 42.8 billion, an 18.7% increase over the same period of 2006. Imports grew by 30.8% to reach US$ 6.1 billion.
