São Paulo – The Brazilian artists Carolina Ponte and Pedro Varela are exhibiting their pieces at the show Dusk to Dawn…Threads of Infinity, from February 9th to April 9th at the Anima Gallery in Doha. The show will feature 15 works.
The show is part of the celebrations of the Qatar-Brazil 2014 Year of Culture. According to information from Zipper Galeria, the São Paulo-based gallery which represents the artists, they have been chosen by the Doha gallery due to the fact that their art represents Brazilian culture.
The gallery informs that Varela first started painting using ballpoint pen on rice paper, and the colour from this type of pen influences his work until this day. According to the gallery, Varela explores gradients from different shades of blue. Because the artist lives in Petrópolis, a city surrounded by mountains, the forest is a recurrent theme in his paintings. Cities are another staple of his pieces.
In turn, Ponte’s work uses crochet, which is widespread in Brazil, as a raw material. The Bahia-based artist, according to the gallery Zipper, are handmade and detail-rich. Ponte also does drawings, and since she works alone, each piece takes up to two months to complete.
Apart from the show, the Brazilian artists have been invited to administer workshops to fine arts students from the Virginia Commonwealth University, in the Qatari capital. The workshops took place this week and the Brazilian artists discussed their careers, as well as the creative processes leading up to their work in painting and crochet. The artists are married.
