São Paulo – The Brazilian government celebrated that the Kyoto Protocol became effective today (16). The international agreement about the climate foresees the reduction in the emission of polluting gases. "Brazil considers this moment as a turning point in history, contributing to the strengthening and credibility of multilateral efforts facing the causes of climate changes," says the statement released by the Itamaraty, the Brazilian Foreign Office.
The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 in the Japanese city and determines that the developed countries, which signed the agreement, should reduce in 5% the emission of polluting gases, which cause the greenhouse effect, in the period between 2008 and 2012, in relation to the volumes registered in 1990.
