São Paulo – Next Saturday (1st), the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply will initiate the second stage of anti-foot-and-mouth disease vaccination of cattle and buffaloes. According to information released by the official news agency Agência Brasil, the campaign will be carried out by the ministry’s federal superintendencies in each state, in partnership with local veterinary service providers.
The Brazilian herd comprises roughly 212 million heads of cattle, but the goal at this stage is to vaccinate 140 million heads in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Tocantins, Sergipe and the Federal District.
Only animals up to 24 months old will be vaccinated. According to the ministry, younger animals are more susceptible to the disease because they have been given less vaccines. This is why they are vaccinated twice a year.
