São Paulo – Negotiations referring to the free trade accord between the Mercosur and the European Union did not finish on Sunday (13), as had been hoped, because the blocs did not manage to reach an accord.
Foreign relations minister Celso Amorim stated that talks about the matter will be maintained for another 48 hours, and that a trade accord depends on political desire. According to him, all that could be done technically has been.
"There will certainly always be other details to solve, but it is necessary to understand that in the same way as the European Union offer is limited, we cannot make five constitutional amendments and 23 changes to the law just to please the Europeans," declared Amorim.
The meeting took place simultaneously to the 11th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), which focuses on strengthening policies of developing countries. The Unctad, to take place in the city of São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil, up to the 18th, brings together representatives from 180 countries.
