São Paulo – Writer Socorro Acioli will give a five-day workshop in Dubai. The Brazilian will travel to the United Arab Emirates at the invitation of a group of expatriates who share the same nationality as the writer. Classes will occur from October 24 to 28, in person, in the emirate. Pictured above, the writer on a photo by Agência Rif, who represents her in Brazil.
Socorro Acioli is also a journalist and holds a Ph.D. in Literature Studies from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). Solely among children’s works, she has published 16 books. Acioli was chosen to run the workshop by Veronika Topic Eleutério, who is also a writer and founder of the Dubrasil Book Club. “We read Socorro’s work in our club in 2016. She is known for the book ‘The Head of the Saint’ [A Cabeça do Santo], but the vast majority of her literature is for children. She has published several children’s works,” explained Eleutério. Since 2015, the club has brought together Brazilian literature lovers who live in Dubai.
The workshop is aimed at Brazilian women who have already published or want to start writing their works. “It was a very personal invitation [I made to Socorro] because I found out we have female writers here. And they are writers with totally different target audiences,” said Eleutério.
The authors are now meeting in a group apart from the Dubrasil Book Club itself. Between them, the focus is to discuss literary creation itself. “When I was told there was a writer, Wiana [Kell], I was very interested and contacted her, who spoke of someone else who wrote a textbook. We invited each other and built up this group. Literature brought us together. All of us were writing, each in our own way; it was another way to bring people together. Books build bridges,” concluded Eleutério.
