São Paulo – The Brazilian diplomat Roberto Azevêdo’s second four-year term as director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) began this Friday (1). According to the WTO, Azevêdo gave an address discussing the challenges facing global trade and the lead-up to the 11th WTO ministerial meeting next December in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“Trade has been growing at persistently low levels, but we are beginning to see some more positive signs,” a WTO press release quoted him as saying. “We must keep working to foster growth and development, and to improve all aspects of the trade system – from oversight and technical assistance to dispute settlement and negotiations. When ministers come together in Buenos Aires in December for our 11th ministerial meeting, they will get the chance to advance these efforts,” he added.
