Brasília – Spending by Brazilians in foreign trips has amounted to US$ 1.870 billion in March this year, according to the Central Bank, released this Wednesday (24th). It is the highest result for the month ever since the Central Bank started keeping records, in 1969. In March 2012, spending stood at US$ 1.627 billion.
In quarter one this year, Brazilians’ overseas spending reached US$ 6.022 billion, as against US$ 5.381 billion in Q1 2012. Spending in Q1 2013 was also an all-time high.
According to the head of the Bank’s Economic Department, Tulio Maciel, rising income has “favoured” foreign travel. According to him, partial spending figures from April 1st to 22nd indicate that foreign travel keeps increasing.
From April 1st to 22nd, foreign spending by Brazilians stood at US$ 1.513 billion, while spending by foreigners visiting Brazil amounted to US$ 454 million.
