Brasília – Spending by Brazilians during trips to foreign countries totalled US$ 3.340 billion in the first quarter of this year, as informed today (22nd) by the Central Bank of Brazil. In the same period of last year, the figure was US$ 1.917 billion.
In turn, spending by foreigners in Brazil in the first quarter totalled US$ 1.655 billion, as against US$ 1.422 billion in the same period of 2009.
To the head of the Central Bank’s Economic Department, Altamir Lopes, the increase in Brazilian foreign travel is driven by “increased income and employment.” “Expenditures are increasing by a much higher rate than revenues [from spending by foreigners in Brazil].”
In March, expenditure by Brazilians abroad totalled US$ 1.121 billion, whereas spending by foreigners in Brazil amounted to US$ 578 million. This month, up until today (22nd), according to the Brazilian Central Bank, Brazilians have spent US$ 769 million during foreign travels, and foreigners have spent US$ 318 million in the country.
