São Paulo – Three Brazilian athletes are competing in the IAAF Continental Cup of Athletics in Marrakech, Morocco, on September 13th and 14th. Fabiana Murer and Augusto Dutra are competing in the pole vault and Jonathan Henrique da Silva, in the triple jump. The championship will feature athletes from all continents and will be held in an Arab country for the first time.
Murer is currently competing in a championship in England, from whence she will travel to Morocco. She achieved her personal best, 4.85 metres, in South Korea, 2011. Dutra vaulted 5.82 metres in Hof, Germany, 2013, and Silva jumped 17.39 metres in São Paulo, 2012.
This is the first time an Arab country is hosting the Continental Cup, sponsored by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The tournament is held every four years. The last edition took place in Split, Croatia. Former host countries include Greece, Spain, South Africa, England, Cuba, Australia, Italy, Canada and Germany.
Entries for the championship are still open, since some athletes are competing elsewhere at this time. According to the IAAF, some of the leading names in athletics have been confirmed to attend, including pole vault world record holder Renaud Lavillenie, from France, and the Olympic long jump champion, Britain’s Greg Rutherford. The competition will take place at the Grand Stade in Marrakech.
