Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s agricultural storage capacity reached 188.8 million tonnes in the first half of 2022, a 3% growth compared to the second half of 2021. Data were released this Wednesday (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
According to the survey, the number of agricultural storage facilities grew by 2.2% from the second half of 2021 to the first half of this year, totaling 8,378. Data from the state of Mato Grosso were not collected due to operational issues, but the state’s capacity was estimated based on information from the first half of last year.
Silos are the primary type of storage predominate in the country, with a useful capacity of 96.1 million tonnes, followed by bulk warehouses, with 70 million tonnes, and conventional, structural, and inflatable warehouses, with 22.6 million tonnes.
Among the Brazilian states, Rio Grande do Sul has the highest number of facilities (2,183), while Mato Grosso has the highest storage capacity (46.9 million tonnes).
Concerning the five main agricultural products stored, which represent 95.8% of total capacity, the most significant volumes are soybeans (35.3 million tonnes), maize (19.3 million), rice (5.1 million), wheat (2.3 million), and coffee (800,000).
