São Paulo – 49.6 million books were sold in Brazil since the beginning of this year, reaching BRL 2 billion (about USD 353 million) in revenue and an increase of 32.7% in volume and 31.3% in sales. Data is part of the Survey on Brazilian Book Retail, carried out by Nielsen BookScan and published by the Brazilian National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL). In 2020, the sector sold 37.3 million books, with revenue of BRL 1.5 billion (about USD 264 million at the current rate).
The 2021 numbers refer to the period from January 4 to December 5. Discounts given by the sector have contributed to this expansion, which brought down the average price, despite the high inflation rate for the year, estimated at over 10%, commented the manager of the Nielsen Book Brazil Division, Ismael Borges. The discounts were the most significant in the last two annual cycles, reaching 25.52%, 2.81% above the average discount for 2020.
According to the survey, Black Friday offers by retailers contributed to increasing the number of books sold and sector revenue in Brazil at the end of the year. Data is collected directly from book stores, e-commerce, and collaborating retailers to carry out the survey.
