São Paulo – Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the president of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussed cooperation, the agreement between the Arab country and Mercosur, and the international scenario during a meeting on Tuesday (24) in Abu Dhabi. Al Nahyan was invited by Lula to visit Brazil, and his country was called upon to join the Tropical Forests Forever Fund.
Mercosur is about to sign an agreement with the UAE. “The two leaders reiterated their interest in swiftly concluding negotiations on the MERCOSUR–UAE Agreement for the establishment of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership,” Brazil’s Presidency said. Both expressed hope that once finalized, the partnership will create new opportunities for constructive economic cooperation between the UAE and Brazil, the Arab country’s WAM news agency reported.
According to the Brazilian statement, President Lula reiterated the importance of the UAE joining the Tropical Forests Forever Fund, launched during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil’s state of Pará. The fund was created to reward developing countries that preserve their tropical forests.
According to WAM, the two leaders reaffirmed their mutual commitment to advancing the partnership to support the development ambitions of their nations and peoples, and reviewed progress in cooperation, particularly in the economic, trade, and development sectors. They discussed collaboration in areas such as advanced technology, space, renewable energy, sustainability, food security, education, logistics, and other fields of mutual interest that support sustainable development.
Both WAM and the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil reported that the leaders discussed regional and international developments, as well as joint efforts to support peace and stability in the Middle East and globally. According to WAM, Lula and Al Nahyan reaffirmed their shared view on the importance of strengthening the foundations of international peace and security.
