São Paulo – One of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s first international appointments as president-elect of Brazil will be in an Arab country, Egypt. Lula confirmed his presence at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27), which begins this Sunday (6) in Sharm El Sheikh. The announcement was made to the press this Tuesday (1) by the president of his political party, Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), Gleisi Hoffmann.
The President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El Sisi, invited the president-elect to participate in the Climate Conference. Lula was also invited to join the Legal Amazon Consortium delegation at COP27. The invitation was made by the governor of Amapá and coordinator of the consortium, Waldez Góes (PDT).
“He will be there,” said Gleisi Hoffmann. There is still no specific date set for the president-elect’s participation. According to Hoffmann, he is looking forward to the best week to travel. However, he could likely participate on November 7 and 8, when the World Leaders Summit will occur.
United States president Joe Biden, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Senegal’s Macky Sall, Netherlands prime minister Mark Rutte, German chancellor Olaf Scholz, new Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, Scotland’s premier Nicola Sturgeon, Spain’s Pedro Sánchez, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, have already confirmed their participation in the summit.
About 90 heads of state have already confirmed their presence in Sharm El Sheikh for next week, according to a release by Egyptian officials. Leaders and representatives from around 190 countries are also expected, all part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The themes of the 27th edition of the conference are Finance, Science, Youth & Future Generations, Decarbonization, Adaptation & Agriculture, Gender, Water, Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) & Civil Society, Energy, and Biodiversity and Solutions.
