São Paulo – Sugarcane milling in the Centre-South region should grow by 45 million tonnes compared with the 2008/2009 crop. The total harvest is expected to reach 550 million tonnes, as against 505 million tonnes in the previous crop. The estimate was calculated by the São Paulo Sugarcane Agroindustry Union (Unica).
The percentage destined for sugar manufacturing should also be larger in 2009/2010, representing 42% of the crop, as against 39.5% in the previous crop.
Ethanol production should rise by 4.7% to reach 26.3 billion litres. In the last crop, 25.1 billion litres were produced.
