Brasília – The 2016/2017 sugarcane crop in Brazil should amount to 691 million tons, a 3.8% increase over the prior crop, according to the initial survey conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab) and released this Thursday (14th).
According to Conab, the variation is due to a 5.4% increase in harvested area, from 8.6 million hectares in the prior crop to 9 million hectares in the current one. If that proves true, this will be the biggest area ever harvested in Brazil.
Conab estimates a 12% increment in sugar production from the previous crop to 37.5 million tons based on the expected harvested area. Conversely, ethanol output should drop by 0.4%, or 121 million liters, compared with the previous crop, to 30.3 billion liters.
