São Paulo – Casa das Rosas will launch an event focusing on refugees from Africa and the Middle East that work in the creative economy sector in São Paulo. The project Deslocamento Criativo (Creative Displacement), which has the support of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for July 14, a Saturday, with lectures and success cases, plus a fair with handicrafts, perfumes, textiles, purses, among other products made by refugees. The event is for free.
Refugees from the African countries of Angola, Congo and Senegal, and from the Arab countries of Syria and Palestine, will offer a snapshot of the opportunities and challenges in their area of work. Deslocamento Criativo is a project aiming to map out and promote the production and participation of refugees living in São Paulo that work in Creative Economy. São Paulo is one of the major destinations for refugees arriving in Brazil, but the force of the creative production done by these people is still little known.
The event’s opening will be at 3 pm with a concert by the band Canja – Música Árabe, followed by the lecture O Último Romântico: Yves Saint Laurent, the creation, the melancholy and the love, by researcher Brunno Almeida Maia. According to the project, the creations by the French fashion designer born in Algeria are multicultural and very influenced by the displacements. The refugees will be the lecture’s target audience.
At 5 pm, two Syrian refugees, a couple, that are now working in the city as fashion designers (in the picture above, Nour Koeder in the left, and Hayam Abo Kasem in the right) will give their testimonies; at 6 pm, the platform of the Deslocamento Criativo project will be presented, simultaneously with a debate on the possibilities of integration of refugees in the creative economy area. At 8 pm, there’s a cultural event with refugees, with poetry, music and dance. The event ends at 9 pm.
During the research for the platform, a Map of the Creative Economy in São Paulo was drawn out, identifying initiatives by refugees in the areas of gastronomy, fashion, language and culture, arts and handicraft. The results of this mapping will be available at the project’s website, which is expected to be the main reference source for those interested in knowing and hiring the work of people living as refugees in São Paulo.
Since there are no official updated data on the number of people living as refugees in São Paulo, or on their contribution to the city’s economy, the Deslocamento Criativo project will try to fill this gap with the launching of the platform.
The initiative was developed with the support of the Secretariat of Culture of the State of São Paulo, via the Cultural Action Program (ProAC – Public calls). The lecture and the debate have limited openings, therefore those interested in attending must arrive one hour before the event to pick up their tickets.
