Rio de Janeiro – Cattle slaughter in Brazil in the second quarter of 2010 registered growth of 7.2% over the first three months of the year and 10% in comparison with the same period in 2009. That is shown in the figures of the Quarterly Animal Slaughter Research by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE), disclosed on Wednesday (30).
According to the institute, the slaughter of 7.587 million heads of cattle in the second quarter of this year confirms the tendency of return to growth, reaching the same level as in the third quarter of 2008, prior to the international crisis.
The South, with growth of 26.1% in cattle slaughter figures, and the Midwest, with 12.9% growth, were, according to the IBGE, the regions that contributed most to the 10% variation over the second quarter in 2009.
Although the indices are better, the research also showed expansion in slaughter of chicken, up 2.4% over the first quarter, and 5.8% as against the same period in 2009. Slaughter of pork, in turn, grew 3.3% over the first three months of 2010 and 6.6% in comparison with the second quarter of last year.
