São Paulo – Professional illustrators from around the world can register starting December to join the 2019 Sharjah Children’s Book Illustrations Exhibition in the United Arab Emirates. The event is part of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, held by the Sharjah Book Authority.
Since 2012, the annual exhibit sees illustrators show their work and compete for prizes. According to the organizers, illustrations play a key role in building the characters and settings for stories and tales, and they help stir up the imagination of children and young people.
The exhibition is designed to provide a creative, interactive space that promotes diversity, publicizing the work of featured illustrators and providing a setting for professionals to get in touch with authors, publishers and the kids.
Registration is free of charge and will be available on the exhibition website from December 1st, 2018 to January 15, 2019. Illustrations are to be submitted by email or mail by February 1st, 2019.
Applicants are to submit three to six illustrations. Copies will not be accepted (this does not apply to submissions in digital format), and maximum length is 50 cm. Additional information is available from illustrator@scrf.ae.
Winners will be named by an international arbitration committee. First, second and third place prizes will be USD 8,000, USD 6,000 and USD 4,000; USD 1,000 incentive prizes will also be given out, as well as three certificates of merit.
The winning illustration in 2018 was Summa (pictured above), by Lithuania’s Rasa Jančiauskaitė.
