Brasília – Brazil may have new record production of grain this year. According to the fourth study in the 2010/2011 cycle, disclosed today (6) by the National Food Supply Company (Conab), 149.416 million tonnes of grain should be picked, growth of 212,000 tonnes over 149.204 million tonnes picked in the previous period. As against the last study, published last month, the estimate has grown 0.22%, or 329,600 tonnes.
According to the Conab, the expansion of the crop area and the improvement in maize productivity in the first crop in Rio Grande do Sul contributed to the positive result. He pointed out, however, that the estimate is conditioned to favourable climate to the main cultures, like cotton, soy, maize, rice and maize.
The area cultivated in the 2010/2011 crop should reach 48 million hectares, representing growth of 1.3% over the previous cycle. The research was made from the 13th to 16th of December, by 51 technicians at the Conab, who heard representatives of cooperatives and rural unions, public and private organisations in the South, Southeast and Midwest, as well as part of the North and Northeast.
