São Paulo – On October 1st and 2nd, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), in Lebanon, promotes the 3rd International Colloquium: Inequality and Democracy in Latin America and the Middle East. The goal of the event is to compare the topics in the two regions and promote the contact between experts of these topics in the countries of the two regions.
“In the social field, there’s a large gap between rich and poor. There’s no middle class in the Middle East”, says Roberto Khatlab, director of the Center of Studies and Culture of Latin America (Cecal) of USEK. The event will also address political issues from both regions.
“In Latin America, there were dictatorships, but in some countries, even today, there’s not a total democracy”, emphasizes the professor.
“In the Middle East, the majority [of the regimes] are dictatorships. The Arab Spring, which started in Tunisia, didn’t produce a lot of results in other countries. It worked in Tunisia, but in Syria and Libya it didn’t. Democracy in the Middle East is a tough issue to solve”, analyses Khatlab.
The event will have tem experts from Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Chile, Lebanon and Egypt. Brazil’s representatives will be professors Alberto Moreira and Valmor da Silva, both from the Department of Philosophy and Theology of the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of the state of Goiás.
“The goal is the exchange of experiences between the two regions for them to have a closer contact. From then, a group is created to continue the studies and to elaborate proposals to the governments”, says Khatlab.
The event is open to the general public. According to Cecal’s director, the previous meeting had the participation of students and teachers from the universities and also of politics.
