Rio de Janeiro – The Consumer Confidence Index has risen up to 98.5 points in April, topping the 96.1 recorded in March this year. Disclosed today (24) by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), the indicator reveals how consumers feel about the economy.
The survey, conducted in seven Brazilian capitals, points out that in the month in question, assessments on the current status of the economy are worsening. Forecasts for the coming months, however, are increasingly optimistic. Thus, the Current Situation Index has decreased by 1%, having totalled 96.8 points in April. The Expectations Index, in turn, has risen by 5%, achieving the highest score (100.2 points) since September last year, when it totalled 108.2 points.
One of the factors that hint at a recovery is the evolution of the indicator that measures consumers’ “impetus” for purchasing durable goods such as refrigerators. The share of those planning to spend on the item over the next six months has increased from 9.6% to 12.6%.
The Consumer Confidence Index is comprised of five queries monitored by the FGV under the Consumer Expectations Survey, conducted in more than 2,000 households in seven different capital cities. This survey was held between March 31st and April 20th, 2009.
