São Paulo – The United Nations Refugees Agency (UNHCR) informed on Thursday (13) the delivery of humanitarian aid to internally displaced people in the northwest of Syria. According to the UN agency, seven lorries transported 1,000 tents and 15,000 blankets from Latakia, on the coast, and Damascus, the capital, to Bab Al-Hawa, a city close to the frontier with Turkey.
The UNHCR pointed out that the operation was only possible with the assistance of the Syrian-Arab Red Crescent, the local version of the Red Cross, and of the local community. This was the second action of the kind promoted by the organisation in the same region. The first convoy transported 2,000 tents and 15,000 blankets.
The civil conflict in Syria has lasted almost two years and has caused large-scale displacements. Apart from internal refugees, over 800,000 Syrians left the country to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt and other nations in the region.
