São Paulo – In an interview with state-run UAE news agency WAM, Brazil’s Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva (pictured) said that the final document and decisions made at U.N. climate summit COP28 will drive enduring investments that are aligned with nature. Silva also praised the COP28 presidency, dubbing it as “unifying” and highlighting the collaboration between the UAE and Brazil, which will host the COP30 in 2025 in the city of Belém.
Silva believes the climate crisis is urgent, and responses to curb global warming need to happen “immediately.” She said that there is no more postponing actions and that it is necessary to make it clear what our commitments are.
Originally scheduled to run from November 30 to Tuesday (12), the conference ended only Wednesday (14) following negotiations that overran its deadline. The original idea of including the elimination of fossil fuels in the text was replaced by a declaration in favor of a transition from fossil fuels to clean sources.
Silva said that humanity is capable of surprising itself when faced with extreme situations, adding that the extreme point of the climate crisis has been reached. She said that the country delegations and participants of COP28 are leaving Dubai with the hope that, even if it’s only the foundations, something grand will be built on them. As COP28 ended, Nature Magazine, the world’s leading science journal, named Marina Silva one of the ten people who helped shape science in 2023.
