Rio de Janeiro – The 2014 crop is expected to surpass the previous year in 3.3%, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said this Wednesday in their November estimate. The institute is expecting that this year’s harvest will reach 194.5 million tons of cereals, legumes and oilseeds, an amount that surpasses in 0.5% (1 million ton) the expectation for the year in October.
The majority of the Brazilian production expected for 2014 is concentrated in Central West and South regions, which account for 42.8% and 37.1% respectively. While the Central West is expected to increase production in 5.9% in comparison to 2013, the South is expecting a drop of 1.2%. The biggest raise is expected in the Northeast region with 31.9%, followed by the North with 5.9%. The Southeast is expecting a drop of 9.3%.
The crop estimative accounts for the productions of herbaceous cotton (cottonseed), peanuts (in shells), rice (in shells), beans (grain), castor bean (in berry), maize (grain), soybean (grain), oat (grain), rye (grain), barley (grain), sunflower (grain), sorghum (grain), wheat (grain) and triticale (grain).
