Rio de Janeiro – Grain production estimates for 2016 are shrinking each month. In August, cereals, oilseeds and pulses are expected to amount to 186.1 million tons, down 11.1% from last year’s record 209.4 million ton crop.
The data are from the August edition of crop survey Levantamento Sistemático da Produção Agrícola (LSPA), made public this Tuesday (6) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Harvest area estimate is also down 0.4% from last year, from 57.6 million to 57.4 million hectares.
Rice, maize and soy remain the biggest crop, with a combined 92.6% share of total output, and 87.8% of harvest area. Still, the IBGE sees output dropping 0.8% for soy, 14.9% for rice and 23.4% for maize.
