São Paulo – The Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Centre has a position open for professors of Portuguese. The selection is in the hands of the embassy of Brazil in Beirut and those interested may send their curricula up to September 2nd. Men and women may participate.
The selection for the post is through analysis of curricula and through personal interviews. To compete for the position, the candidate must have graduate education in Portuguese Language and Literature, be a Lebanese citizen or, in the case of Brazilians, have dual citizenship or a work and residence permit in Lebanon.
Inaugurated in September 2011, the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Centre offers Portuguese lessons in regular (three months) and intensive (one month) modules. The selected candidate should start his activities in October this year, having a two-month experience period.
The new teacher will be taken on according to the Lebanese labour legislation and will have a work shift of 20 hours a week. The salary offered for the position is 1.65 million Lebanese pounds, equivalent to US$ 1085.
The contract is for one year and may be renewed indefinitely. Apart from fluent Portuguese, the candidate must also speak French or English. In case there are no candidates who have graduated in Language and Literature, the embassy will consider graduates in other areas. The result of the selective process will be disclosed on September 6th.
Lebanese speaking Portuguese
According to Fábio de Oliveira, who is responsible for the cultural sector at the Brazilian embassy in Beirut, most of the Lebanese seeking Portuguese lessons are specifically interested in Brazil. “Many have relatives living in the country,” he explained.
The diplomat tells that demand for Portuguese lessons is on the rise. “One of the reasons is the economic and tourist potential of Brazil in recent years. Apart from that, there are people aiming to promote academic studies in the country, as well as Lebanese professionals seeking labour opportunities in other Portuguese speaking nations,” he pointed out.
According to Oliveira, events for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics have also been attracting those Lebanese interested in travelling to Brazil for these events to the lessons at the Cultural Centre.
