São Paulo – This Friday (30th), the Organization in Defence of the Palestinian People (Frente em Defesa do Povo Palestino) will hold a demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian people on Ramos de Azevedo Square, in the centre of São Paulo. According to information from the organization, the demonstration will call for the end of what it calls “unrelenting attacks” by Israel and to denounce the “discrimination” that Palestinians undergo.
The organization chose March 30th because it marks Land Day. On that date in 1976, the Committee for the Defence of the Earth summoned roughly 400,000 Arabs who resided in Galilee, Israel, for a general strike. The strike was to be a protest against Israel’s decision to expropriate plots in the region, which were home to Arabs among other people. The action was met with repression from the Israelis. Clashes left six people dead and approximately 100 wounded.
The demonstration scheduled for 05:00 pm next Friday will also call on the Brazilian government to break the agreements it maintains with Israel. According to the organizers, the event will “express solidarity” with the “March to Jerusalem,” due the same day.
