São Paulo – This Thursday (13th), the World Bank approved a US$ 5 million loan to Djibouti, aimed at guaranteeing jobs and food to the population. The funds will be supplied by by the International Development Association (IDA), the bank’s poverty-fighting arm.
The agreement provides that 70% of the funds will be used by the Djibouti authorities to ensure short-term jobs in small communities. Another 30% will be allocated to improving food distribution, particularly for children, lactating and pregnant women.
According to a press statement released by the World Bank, Djibouti was one of the hardest-hit countries by the 2011 Horn of Africa drought. On that occasion, the bank allotted US$ 250 million to meet the nutritional and basic needs of 13.2 million people in Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
