São Paulo – E-commerce revenues should reach 18.7 billion reals (US$ 10 billion) in Brazil this year, according to estimates by Empresa de Inteligência e Comércio Eletrônico (Ebit, Portuguese for Intelligence and Electronic Commerce Company). If the figure proves true, it will represent a 36% increase compared with 2010.
According to the company, in the first half, the top selling items online were home appliances and computer products, followed by healthcare and beauty products , books, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and electronic devices.
In the first six months of 2011, according to the company, e-trade revenues reached 7.8 billion reals (US$ 4.1 billion) in Brazil, a 42.2% increase over the same period of last year.
Ebit informs that Brazil has the fifth largest number of internet users in the world. There are approximately 80 million people online. The company adds that 4 million people made their first online purchase this year, 61% of which are in the lower middle class.
