Rio de Janeiro – The Economic Uncertainty Indicator (IIE-Br) increased in December for the second straight month. The index went from 126.4 points in November to 136.4 points in December. The information was made public this Wednesday (28) by the Brazilian Institute of Economics of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Ibre/FGV). The 10 point hike drove the indicator to its highest level since July 2015.
FGV economist Pedro Costa Ferreira said the reversal of the downtrend that lasted from July to October confirms “the return of a spell of heightened economic uncertainty in Brazil.” According to him, however, although a 10-point increment in one month is “expressive,” “as a caveat one must point out that this indicator is highly volatile, and strongly influenced by political events throughout the year.”
