São Paulo – Egypt will receive, from July 24th to 26th, the Egyptian-African Forum for Seed Industry and Agricultural Biotechnology, to discuss the agricultural future of the African continent and the part played by biotechnology. The forum is turned to those interested in the theme, in any professional area, and will take place at Mövenpick Hotel Media City, in Cairo.
Organisation is by the ministry of Minister of Higher Education and the State Ministry of Scientific Research, as well as the African Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology (Amcost). There will be speakers from several countries, even outside the continent, like India, Belgium, Taiwan and Syria. From Africa, speakers will come from Nigeria, Burundi, Mozambique, Malawi, Sudan and from Egypt itself.
Among the main topics covered are irrigation and systems for water and soil management, production of seeds, mainly hybrid, post-harvest, pricing and marketing and farmer and professional training, as well as the future of investment in the sector in Africa.
Some specific cases, like the experience in the improvement of rice in Africa, the potential of agricultural biotechnology in Nigeria, how biotechnology may help dry regions in Africa to generate income, research to fight Stem Rust fungus in Africa and Asia and the participation of the private sector in the seed industry in Egypt.
One of the sessions forecasted will specifically cover agricultural investment and will focus on countries like Ethiopia and Sudan. The last day will be free to visit Egypt’s Agricultural Research Centre (ARC), seed industries in the Arab country or any other point of interest.
