São Paulo – The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Egypt’s Economic and Commercial Office in São Paulo will hold, on November 7, the 2nd Brazil-Egypt Economic Forum: Business and Investment Opportunities, at the headquarters of the Arab Chamber, in São Paulo. The meeting will be attended by Sahar Nasr, Egypt’s minister of Investment and International Cooperation, and admiral Mohab Mamish, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority.
“They will probably be joined by a delegation of business owners planning to export, especially products such as fertilizers, food products and textiles,” said the Arab Chamber’s CEO, Michel Alaby.
Among the topics to be discussed are Egypt’s free trade zones, investment opportunities in the Arab country, trade under the Mercosur-Egypt Free Trade Agreement – which went into effect last year –, and the registration of Brazilian companies and products in the North Africa country.
The director general of the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC) will make a presentation about the last topic. “All companies have to register with GOEIC,” said Alaby, adding that this is valid to companies of any nationality.
Egyptian authorities will also discuss the country’s business environment, the economic growth outlook and the stability of the Egyptian pound. The forum is open to all business owners interested in doing business with Egypt.
The forum’s first edition took place in May of this year, also at the Arab Chamber, and Egyptian authorities have been promoting, since last year, when the agreement with Mercosur went into effect, a series of activities to promote business with Brazil.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Egypt’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) should grow 5.3% this year.
Brazil’s exports to the Egyptian market totaled nearly USD 1.5 billion from January to September, down 14% over the same period of last year, according to data from the Arab Chamber. The main products shipped out were beef, iron ore, maize, sugar and tobacco.
On the other hand, the Arab country sold to Brazil over USD 157 million worth of goods, up 21% in the same comparison. The main items imported by Brazil from Egypt were fertilizers, food products of plant origin, cotton, paraffin and yeasts.
