São Paulo – Brazilian beef exports added up to US$ 252 million in April, the same revenue of the month of April 2005. Some 167,300 tonnes of the product were shipped, which represented a drop in 13.7% in relation to the same period last year, according to information released today (10) by the Brazilian Beef Industry and Exporters Association (Abiec).
These results reflect the embargoes on Brazilian bovine meat from some countries and the appreciation of the Brazilian real in relation to dollar, which reduced price competitiveness in the international market. However, from January to April, exports of the product increased by 16%. External sales added up to US$ 1 billion and 715,600 tonnes of beef were shipped in the first four months of they year, an increase of only 2.4% in relation to the same period last year.
The main Brazilian importer of in natura beef in April was Egypt, with sales of US$ 20.9 million and 16,900 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom, US$ 20.6 million and 10,500 tonnes, the Netherlands, with US$ 19.2 million and 5,400 tonnes. The main importers of industrialised beef, in turn, are the United States, United Kingdom and Italy.
