São Paulo – Egyptian musician Hossam Ramzy will be in Brazil from July 31st to August 23rd for workshops, concerts, lectures and an immersion course to Brazilian Arab music dancers. Apart from being known in the music industry for his work as a percussionist, Ramzy has also produced CDs and songs to world-famous artists and bands like Shakira, Ricky Martin, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and Luciano Pavarotti, among others.
Hossam is coming to Brazil with his wife, the Brazilian dancer Serena Ramzy, who teaches the courses with him. “He is an ambassador of Arab music in the world. He is known not only as a musician, but also as a great composer,” says Dani Agnis, owner of dancing school Studio Agni, responsible for the Egyptian’s coming to Brazil.
Agnis tells that since 2011, her school has promoted events featuring Ramzy in Brazil. He has played and taught in Brasília, Campo Grande, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Americana. Ramzy’s classes are taught in English.
Ramzy and Serena’s schedule in Brazil begins in Recife, the capital of Brazil’s Pernambuco state, from July 31st through August 2nd. It will be their first activities in the city. According to Adriana Zahir, the producer of the Recife events, belly-dancing is becoming increasingly popular in the city. “Pernambuco still lacks spaces where one can come into contact with Arab culture,” she remarks. There will be a lecture, two concerts and two workshops in the city. Arab dance groups from the Brazilian Northeast will perform.
In Rio de Janeiro, which Ramzy and Serena will visit for the second time, there will also be a lecture, a concert and two workshops, from August 7th to 9th. The events in these two cities will target professional and amateur dancers alike.
In Águas de Lindóia, the musician and the dancer will teach an immersion course from August 16th to 23rd. The classes will build on contents from their previous immersion courses, in 2012 and 2014, and therefore will only be available to people who attended one of the past editions. Techniques involving rhythms like baladi and fusion will be covered, among others.
