São Paulo – Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer signed yesterday (07) a contract with the Colombian government to supply 25 units of the Super Tucano, turboprop aeroplane for military training and light attack. The deal, at the value of US$ 235 million, will be the first export of this model, which already is operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
According to information from Embraer, the Colombian Air Force (FAC) will use the aircrafts in internal security operations and border patrol. The FAC already has in their fleet 14 units of the old Tucano, of which the Super Tucano was derived. "The contract involves also the supply of an extensive logistics pack and training systems, including a complete flight simulator," said a statement disclosed by Embraer.
The Super Tucano started being developed in 1995 and its first unit was delivered to the FAB in December 2003. In all, Brazilian Aeronautics ordered 99 aircrafts, which are still being delivered. According to Embraer, in Brazil the aeroplane is used to train pilots and also in missions of the System for the Surveillance of the Amazon (Sivam).
