São Paulo – Emirates is working to increase its cargo volumes amid the coronavirus pandemic. Last Monday (30) saw it fly some 500,000 Covid-19 test kits to São Paulo’s GRU Airport, from Guangzhou, China via Dubai. The company said in a press release that this was the first of two flights carrying supplies into Brazil.
This week also saw Emirates fly close to 200 tons of medical supplies, including hand sanitizer and facemasks, from Hong Kong to Sydney, Australia. Another flight carried pharmaceuticals into Karachi, Pakistan.
As part of a special charter operation prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Emirates is flying cargo in airlines. A case in point is its Boeing 777 (pictured), which flew nearly 100 tons of material, including hospital supplies, into Milan, Italy. Another 55 tons of highly temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals were flown from Mumbai to New York.
Emirates said that in addition to carrying medical supplies, Emirates SkyCargo is flying food cargo across the UAE and the Middle East. The last week of March saw special flights from Pakistan and India carry over 150 tons of perishables into Dubai. Cargo flights from Cairo, Egypt and Nairobi, Kenya are also transporting perishables to Dubai and other Middle East destinations.
